Own Your Part Tool
For busy parents • practical in 10-15 minutes
The real-life problem
Every hard talk turns into "your fault" vs "no, your fault."
When you are juggling kids, work, and no sleep, this is common. It does not mean you are failing.
Do this tonight (10-15 minutes)
- Set a 10-minute timer.
- Person A says: “My part in this was…” and names one thing they did.
- Person B does the same. No interrupting. No defending.
- Each person picks one tiny repair step for tomorrow (example: "I will ask before I assume" or "I will take bedtime so you can reset").
Copy/paste script
“I’m not trying to win this. I want us to feel better tonight. Can we do a quick 10-minute reset and each own our part?”
Kid-chaos version (when you’re exhausted)
- Split it up: 5 minutes now, 5 minutes after bedtime.
- Can’t talk live? Trade two short voice notes.
- If either of you gets too heated, take 20 minutes, then finish.
Starter kit (no guesswork)
Pick one of these and run it exactly tonight:
- 5-minute version: Read the copy/paste script out loud, then do one tiny action from this tool immediately.
- 10-minute version: Set a timer, follow the “Do this tonight” steps top to bottom, and stop when timer ends.
- Couple-text version: Send this now: “Can we do Own Your Part Tool tonight for 10 minutes? I already picked the first step so this is easy.”
If you feel stuck, use the 5-minute version first. Progress beats perfection.
What “better” looks like in 7 days
- Fights end sooner
- Less blame, more teamwork
- You feel calmer in the same hard moments
Keep it simple: If this helps even a little, keep using it this week.
How to use this tool effectively
- When to use it: Use Own Your Part Tool when this exact problem is happening now, not as a general reading exercise.
- How often: Run it once today, then repeat 3-7 times before judging results.
- Common mistake: Changing multiple things at once. Use one tool at a time so you can see what works.
- If it feels awkward: Use the script exactly once, keep the first run under 10 minutes, and rate helpfulness 1-10.
Tomorrow rep + fallback + escalation
- Tomorrow: run this same tool once more before trying a new one.
- If it didn’t help: switch to Pause-and-Return Tool first, then retry.
- If it got worse or felt unsafe: stop DIY and involve a licensed professional/support resource.
